Special Application Instructions for the Louis L. King Scholarship and the Eva and William Newbern Scholarship.

Louis L. King Scholarship 

The Louis L. King Scholarship is in honor of the long and dedicated service of Louis L. King to the advancement of world missions and to the labor for Jesus Christ entrusted to The Christian and Missionary Alliance. The scholarship will be used to defray the tuition expense of selected Alliance Theological Seminary students.

Criteria

  1. Applicants shall write an essay concerning their call to make disciples entitled “My Vision for World Evangelization.” The essay must be three, double-spaced, typed pages in length.
  1. Applicants must have demonstrated academic excellence during their undergraduate or graduate study by attaining at least a 3.0 GPA. A student’s status is to be reviewed at the conclusion of each semester. If the student fails to earn a 3.0 GPA during the Fall term (or first term), the balance of the scholarship will be forfeited.
  1. Applicants must have “responded to the call of God for world missionary service and have demonstrated commitment to this high calling by disciplined living, commendable study habits, and vision for world evangelism.”

The William and Eva Newbern Scholarship

The Newbern Scholarship will be used to defray the tuition expense of Alliance Theological Seminary students during their residence or in-ministry segment of the ATS program.

Criteria

  1. Applicants must have as their goal in Christian ministry an Educational, Pastoral, or Missionary career.
  1. Applicants must write an essay affirming their commitment to Biblical Faith and World evangelism. The essay must be three, double spaced, typed pages in length.
  1. Applicants must have demonstrated academic excellence during their undergraduate or graduate study by attaining at least a 3.0 GPA. A student’s status is to be reviewed at the conclusion of each semester. If the student fails to earn a 3.0 GPA or better during the Fall term (or first term), the balance of the scholarship will be forfeited.
  1. Special consideration may be given to Chinese students or those who especially plan to serve among the Chinese people.

Johnson International Scholarship (international students only)

The Johnson International Scholarship seeks to identify, equip, train, and mobilize indigenous leaders from non-Western cultures who are followers of Jesus Christ so “the whole Church takes the whole gospel to the whole world.”  Applicants must excel academically, show exceptional leadership potential, desire to make followers of Jesus, and serve the global church.

Criteria

  1. This scholarship is limited to Alliance Theological Seminary full-time, international (F-1) students with preference for those studying for either their (1) M.Div with Missions Concentration or (2) Master of Arts Intercultural Studies.
  2. Demonstrate academic achievement, participate in ministry, and exhibit financial need.  New incoming international students are eligible for this grant.
  3. Qualified applicants must submit an essay of no more than 800 words that describes how, where, and with whom they intend to serve God in His Mission.
  4. The application should also include two (2) letters of recommendation from ecclesial leaders where the applicant has served.

Gary Wayne Shaffer Memorial Scholarship

To provide a full scholarship (including room, board, and tuition) to an exceptional student attending Nyack College in Nyack, New York.  This scholarship will be given annually to a full-time residential student who qualifies and is be selected by the scholarship committee and chosen by the governing board of the Somerset Alliance Church.

Criteria

1.  Selection will be based on the following criteria:  financial need (20%), life goals (20%), academics (20%), church/community service (20%), and character/leadership potential (20%).
2.  Priority will be given to an outstanding applicant from the Somerset Alliance Church.  If a suitable candidate does not apply from Somerset Alliance Church, then the search will be extended to the Western PA District of the Christian and Missionary Alliance.
3.  Required materials – application, answers to questions, essay, copy of current transcript (for at least the three academic years) or equivalent, three references
