“The Wiz,” A Nyack College School of Music Off-Broadway Production

Nyack College students, alumni and staff will be centerstage at the American Theatre of Actors at 314 West 54th Street beginning Thursday, November 29 as they present the School of Music’s production of “The Wiz.” The original 1975 Broadway production, based on L. Frank Baum’s book, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” won seven Tony Awards, including “Best Musical” and “Best Original Score.” Also the winner of multiple Drama Desk Awards, it was reprised as a film in 1978, revived on other New York City stages in 1984, 1995 and 2009 and aired as a live NBC television special in 2015.

“The Wiz” recasts the classic 1900 children’s novel in a contemporary urban context. Its soundtrack is a blend of R&B, gospel and popular music with tunes like “Ease on Down the Road,” “Believe in Yourself,” “Brand New Day,” “Be a Lion,” and “Home.” The Nyack actors and musicians are certain to deliver a powerful performance that showcases the special breed of talent honed at Nyack’s School of Music.

If you’ve enjoyed past Nyack productions like “West Side Story” and “In The Heights,” you know it’s hard to distinguish between our student actors and the Actor’s Equity card-carrying professionals on Theatre Row. Join the campus community at one (or more) performances of this family-friendly show.
