“I had a very traumatic experience in high school through a test that I took. My desire was to be an engineer and I took this test that they gave students and the test came back and said that I’d be a good handyman. From that point I really got discouraged about education and never thought I had what it took to complete college. Thirty-seven years after graduating from high school I found out about the Nyack OM program and how they cater more towards older students if you have a certain amount of credits. I went to a satellite campus in Brooklyn and it was a great group of students similar like myself and we banded together.
Finally I completed my degree where I didn’t think I had the skill set to do it. It brought me to tears. Just being there at the ceremony was overwhelming, the whole Christian atmosphere, the songs, the prayer, the comradery amongst the students. That’s probably one of the best feelings I had in life to have my family there at fifty-five years old walking across the stage getting my Bachelors degree, that was awesome for me. I feel empowered, I feel that now I can now successfully implement the vision that I believe God has given me to impact lives specifically youth and their families, that’s what I have gained with this experience and all with a Christian atmosphere, that’s the exciting part.” -Ray Colston
