Nyack Literati Celebrate 50 Years of “The Fine Print”

The staff of Nyack’s student-edited literary journal, The Fine Print, marked a milestone this week with the release of its 50th anniversary of publishing poetry, short fiction, essays, photography, and fine art created by students, faculty and staff. Work submitted comes from English majors as well as students in other disciplines. Content this year includes new work and selections from the last half century. The front cover was illustrated by junior Hanna Lee; the back cover is aNyack Literati Celebrate 50 Years of “The Fine Print” reprise of the first issue’s cover in 1968. The editor of this special issue was senior Christine Rosa de Freitas who is Nyack’s 2018 valedictorian.

Dr. Jonathan Gates, director of the Nyack College Honors Program and English professor has been the faculty advisor for the last 16 years. He comments, “One of the privileges of being The Fine Print advisor is the opportunity to work with and showcase talented young people who are practicing their art, some with limited experience and others with considerable practice. When their work is featured in the literary journal, we have a tremendous display of the diversity of God-given imagination and craft.”

Dr. Gates (pictured above with Christine Rosa de Frietas) shares that some of the creative writers have had work published in other journals including Natasha Miller in The North Dakota Quarterly; Maggie Felisberto, a fiction editor at The Tampa Review for a time, and Elizabeth Kendrex, a blogger on young adult literature called Leaf’s Review.

Copies of The Fine Print are available at the circulation desks at the Bailey, Eastman and Wilson libraries.
