Herman Alvarado, Nyack College Class of 2019, smiles through the zoom call with WNYK Warrior Radio. He’s currently playing professional baseball for the Pericos de Puebla of the Mexican League. “Being able to just play a game, and get paid for it. It’s a blessing. And I’m grateful to Nyack College.”

A Warrior Standout

Nyack College recruited Herman back in 2017, and he was an absolute standout for the Warriors baseball team. He hit an amazing .348 during his Warriors career, but some of his best memories from his days at Nyack came off the field. “Just spending time in the dorms. Outside of the field. The bus rides with teammates. Great, great memories. To this day I still plan vacations around my old teammates. We all try to get together. It’s a community.” Herman also deems it important to give back to the community of baseball. That’s why in the offseason you’ll find him on the diamond running clinics for kids. “It’s amazing how much fun the kids have. I really try not to be strict. We need to remember that it’s just a game.”

College Community at Nyack

Those who have been following Warrior Radio for a while may remember Herman from his time as a WNYK intern. He was a student intern for two semesters at Warrior Radio, and he loved every minute of it. “I was able to speak Spanish a bit during my show, which I loved. My show was all about sports. Baseball, football, soccer. It was a highlight for me.” Another highlight for Herman was the professors at Nyack College. ”I didn’t even have a favorite. Every one of them pushed me to be better. As an athlete you have to maintain your grades, and they all made me a better student.” Herman also appreciated how the community at Nyack College impacted his life. “It was humbling. I feel like you know everyone there. It really is a community feeling.” The diversity of the Nyack College community also helped him prepare for his life as a professional baseball player. “The teams in the Mexican League are very diverse. You have players from all over the world.”

Faith That Has Not Waned

Herman is also very grateful to Nyack College for instilling a sense of true faith that has never waned. “I walked out of Nyack College faith-filled. Faith is the biggest part of me now, and what keeps me going in life. That wasn’t always the case for me. I’m unashamed about my Christianity. Nyack really helped me with that.”
