If you watched “Jesus Christ Superstar Live,” the NBC musical broadcast on Easter Sunday, you recognized a list of stars like John Legend, Sara Bareilles, Alice Cooper, Brandon Victor Dixon, Norm Lewis and Jason Tam. You may not have known that also in the mix of performers was Nyack’s own New York City School of Music professor and pianist Mary Gatchell. A School of Music adjunct, who teaches music theory, applied oboe, and musical theater workshop, she has been on the Nyack staff since 2015.
Prof. Gatchell is a professional oboist, pianist, composer, conductor, and singer, with a stellar musical background. She has recorded seven albums; the latest, “Camino Real,” was released in late 2017. Mary is also the co-Founder and artistic director of Siena Summer Music, a chamber music festival in Siena, Italy.
Nyack Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. David Turk’s response to the television special was, “Bravo to Nyack’s Mary Gatchell who played piano for the show! She was our wonderful choreographer for “West Side Story” and “In the Heights.” Dr. Turk was executive producer/director of both Nyack Performing Arts Department productions.
