“Inside Higher Education” Op-Ed by President Scales Addresses Benefits of Prison Education

President Michael G. Scales was recently invited to address the benefits of prison reform and its impact on higher education in prisons. Read his op-ed which appeared following the U.S. Senate’s bipartisan 87-12 vote to pass the FIRST STEP Act on prison reform, which will support  completion of degree programs and provide vocational training, which will contribute to lowering recidivism rates.

For nearly two decades Nyack College has offered degree programs in New York correctional facilities, graduating its first cohort in 2001 from Sing Sing Correctional Facility. In February 2019, more than 50 undergraduate degrees will be conferred at Fishkill Correctional Facility. To date, graduates of Nyack’s Fishkill program have a 0% recidivism rate; New York State’s recidivism rate is more than 40%.
