March 2 | How Nyack College Has Positively Impacted Urban Waterways

Nyack College Associate Professor of biology, Dr. Peter Park, will be the guest lecturer on Monday, March 2, 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM in the Eastman Library at the Nyack New York City campus, 2 Washington Street in Room 1904 on the 19th floor.

Dr. Park explains, “Over the last year, a newly established network, the East River Ichthyological Alliance (ERIA), has sought three important environmentally-focused goals: (1) development of a fish diversity database using data from angling and citizen science, (2) establishment of new beginner-level and intermediate-level public angling clinics throughout New York City and (3) development of marine education workshops during March 2020 that integrate angling and ichthyology to serve diverse New York City communities. This project aims to support the city’s growing environmental enthusiast populations and is a partnership of Nyack College, Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy and Randall’s Island Park Alliance, funded through a grant from the Marine and Coastal District of New York Conservation, Education and Research Small Grants Program.”

Dr. Park’s expertise is in evolutionary ichthyology and his current research interests include fish cognitive ecology, fish citizen science, aquaponics and teaching science through active learning. Through public engagement and fish research, citizen scientists all over New York City, including Nyack College students and faculty, have been instrumental in integrating understanding, awareness and monitoring efforts of East River fish diversity.

The March indoor workshops will include an introduction to getting started in NYC fishing and fish citizen science; hands-on fishing skills tutorials on knot-tying, lure selection, “reading the water” and an overview of the biology of NYC fish species.

Due to limited seating, registration for the following workshops is required. Admission is free.
