Celebrating Women’s History Month and Nyack/ATS Alumnae

The late Cicely Tyson, Emmy and Oscar Award-winning film, television and Broadway actress; Elaine L. Chao, former U.S. Secretary of Transportation and 24th U.S. Secretary of Labor; Roma Downey, Actress, film producer and author; Frances E. Pratt, retired president of the NAACP Nyack Branch; and Shirley V. Hoogstra, president of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities. Each of these distinguished women is the recipient of a Nyack honorary doctorate.

At Nyack College and Alliance Theological Seminary, with a student population that is 57.1% female and a near mirror reflection of our faculty that is 51% female, the institution has a robust history of extraordinarily accomplished women.  Nyack/ATS has provided them with an environment of academic excellence, global engagement, intentional diversity, personal transformation and social relevance.

Throughout the month of March we will highlight several alumni–not an exhaustive list–but a selection of women who are making great strides and notable contributions just like our honorary degree recipients. They are flourishing in the fields of  business, education, ministry, sports, medicine, community activism and outreach, as well as the arts and entertainment.

In the words of physicist Marie Curie, “Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained.”

Join us as we applaud graduates of Nyack/ATS and their extraordinary accomplishments!
