Nyack College Writing Center: Frequently Asked Questions

  • When is the Writing Center open?
    • Mon-Thurs 11AM-12AM
      Friday 11AM-5PM
      Saturday 1PM-5PM
      Closed Sunday
  • Where is the Writing Center located?
    • We are located above the Bailey Library on the Nyack College Rockland campus.  Look for the glass doors!
  • Who are the Writing Consultants?
    • Our Consultants come from a variety of disciplines and have a G.P.A. of at least 3.0.  They have received an A or A- in their College Writing I and II courses and have exemplified excellent writing skills.  Our Consultants have received training and are enthusiastic to assist students with their writing needs.
  • How can I become a Writing Consultant?
    • If you would like to apply to be a Writing Consultant speak to Sarah Cordova, the Coordinator of the Writing Center, to inquire if we are currently hiring. 
  • What do I do if I would like a Consultant to look over my paper?
    • When you enter the Writing Center, sign in at the desk on the right, inform the Consultant you would like to meet with him or her, and circle “Writing & Research Assistance” on the log-in form.  The Consultant will then ask you to pull up a chair once he or she is ready to meet with you.
    • You also have the option of making an appointment for a future session.
  • How do I make an appointment?
    • If you would like to make an appointment, you may do so by calling in or stopping by and speaking to a Consultant.  The following are some things to keep in mind when making an appointment:
      • On the day for which an appointment is scheduled, students will be given 15 minutes, from the start of the appointment, to appear in the office or the time slot will be forfeited to walk-in students.  Should the student with an appointment appear later than 15 minutes from the intended appointment start time, he/she must sign-in as a walk-in and wait for the Consultant to become available.
      • No Show Forms will be filled out for students who miss their appointments. Students with three No Show Forms, in a given semester, will lose the privilege of making appointments for the remainder of the semester.  
      • If you make an appointment and later need to cancel it, you must do so 24-hours in advance. 
  • Can a Consultant see me on short notice?
    • Yes, a Consultant can see you on short notice.  However, we highly recommend that you allow yourself sufficient time for the session so that the Consultant may thoroughly review your assignment.  Also, we suggest you have your first draft complete well in advance of the due date so you will have time for multiple revisions. 
  • Are there different Consultants available for various levels of study and programs?
    • Yes, we serve undergraduate and graduate students in various disciplines.
  • Can I visit the Writing Center before I write my paper?
    • Absolutely.  In addition to reviewing a paper with a student, Consultants are available to aid in the prewriting process of a writing assignment including brainstorming and outlining.
  • Can I bring in a finished draft?
    • Yes, however, we recommend successive sessions for an assignment.  We strongly believe that multiple appointments are important because there are various aspects of writing that cannot all be addressed in one session (such as content, coherence, grammar, spelling, etc.).
  • Can a Consultant work with me on my laptop or at a computer?
    • No, all sessions are held at the Consultant desk with a printed copy of the paper or assignment sheet.  There are computers available where you can print your assignment before you meet with a Consultant.
  • Do you offer a drop-off service?
    • No, we believe one-on-one sessions to be the most effective way for a student to become equipped with skills to improve his or her writing.
  • Am I allowed to talk on my cell phone in the Center if it’s for academic reasons?
    • No, sorry but talking on cell phones is prohibited in the Center.  Our aim is to maintain an academic environment, suitable for academic success.
  • Can I bring food and drink into the Writing Center?
    • Covered beverages are allowed although food is not.  Please enjoy your snacks before entering the Center.
  • Do you hold group sessions?
    • Group sessions may be held to address a common issue students tend to struggle with.  Information will be posted concerning upcoming group sessions.
  • How can I contact the Writing Center?

  • What can I expect from a session?
    • Once you have signed in and indicated you would like writing assistance, the Consultant will ask you to pull up a chair once he or she is available to meet with you.  If you are coming in for work on your paper, please have a printed, double-spaced copy of your paper.  Whether you have begun a first draft or not, bring your assignment sheet or syllabus with the assignment detail.
    • The Consultant will discuss your assignment with you, assessing what work has already been done and what needs to be done.  Communicate with the Consultant any specific concerns or questions you may have. Together you and the Consultant can set goals for the session so that your needs will be met.
    • At the end of the session, the Consultant will discuss with you suggestions for further developing your work.  You may also schedule another appointment.
  • What writing services are offered at the Center?
    • Consultants are available to work with you on all levels of the writing process! We offer assistance with formulating thesis statements; discussing assignments and brainstorming ideas; creating an outline; creating a works cited page; formatting in-text citations; formatting your paper in APA, MLA, or Chicago/Turabian style; navigating online resources; checking your paper for organization and coherence; and reviewing for grammar and spelling.
