What is CAS?

The College of Arts and Sciences offers courses in the areas of Drama, Physical Science, Modern Languages, Biology, Chemistry, Fine Arts, and Political Science.

The aim of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences is to provide each student with general knowledge and intellectual skills that they “may be complete, furnished to every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:17)

Although today many students seek to gain a professional degree, the core curriculum of Nyack College empowers students to understand and experience the world around them from a richer perspective. The Liberal Arts, “liberal” from the Latin word liber, meaning “free,” represent an ancient tradition in education. In the world of Plato and Aristotle, a liberal education was limited to the free men of the city, citizens who lived a life of leisure and pursued education for the joy of learning, in contrast to those who were forced to prepare themselves to earn a liveliihood.  In America’s democratic society, a liberal education is available to all peoples who seek to excell not only in their profession, but  in their role as educated citizens.

The Arts & Sciences at Nyack College are taught from a Christian worldview. Through history, philosophy, literature, drama, languages and fine arts, we understand and appreciate the diverse societies, cultures and religions of the world. Through the sciences and math, we seek to learn the wonders of God’s creation and rational patterns of thought. In each of these areas, students are challenged to be open to new ideas and to develop a life-long thirst for learning.

Through learning gained in the area of liberal arts and sciences, Nyack College students attain academic excellence, become socially relevant, are globally engaged, experience the value of diversity and are personally transformed by the integration of faith and learning.
