Biology Chair Applauds Success of Nyack Students at SEA-PHAGE Conference

Nyack’s Biology Department Chair Dr. Jacqueline Washington applauds her biology students who attended the New York Chapter Regional SEA-PHAGES (Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science) Symposium held at Mt. Saint Mary’s College in Newburgh, NY. A bacteriophage, also known informally as a phage, is a virus that infects and replicates within bacteria.

Nyack junior Mariana Pereira Moraes was selected as one of four students who gave oral presentations. Mariana’s presentation was entitled, “Host Range Exploration and Characterization of Gordonia Bacteriophages.” Several students presented posters and one Nyack poster, “Exploring New Terraetories with Gordonia Phages” by Mariana along with fellow student Maridalia Lillis earned first place among the poster presentations.
