Personal Questions |
Tell us about your spiritual journey. |
I came to Christ at the age of seven through the influence of godly parents and my home church, First Alliance, Orlando, Florida. I have the great blessing of a wonderful spiritual heritage on both sides of the family, through godly grandparents, aunts and uncles, and my parents. At the age of 13 I completely surrendered my life to Christ, to "go where He would have me go and do what He would have me do." My interest in missions grew to a conviction of God's leading, so I prepared myself for that service at Columbia International University (Columbia Bible College), a school well-known for its missions focus. Two years after graduating from CIU, I met my husband, Ed, at Alliance Theological Seminary, Nyack, New York. After a number of years of pastoral service in two different C&MA churches in the U.S., the Lord blessed us with three terms of service in Peru. We were privileged to witness His working there and to be involved in theological education in the northern coastal city of Trujillo. In July 2004 the Mission entrusted the work completely to the direction of the national church. The Lord brought Ed and I to teach at Nyack this Fall 2004 with the desire is to train future Christian leaders, especially those interested in overseas service. |
Tell us about your family |
| The Lord has blessed us with four wonderful children - one son and three daughters. Ed (III), 25, works for Wachovia Bank in Columbia, SC. Betsy, 23 and an graduate of CIU, works for a companion group of Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Amy, 21, will begin studies at Nyack College this Spring semester 2005. Laurie, 16, is finishing her final year at the Alliance Academy in Quito, Ecuador. She plans to attend Nyack beginning Fall 2005. |
Any outside interests or hobbies? |
| I love to sing, to take walks and to read. Most of all, I enjoy family times together! |
How were you led to Nyack and/or why are you here? |
| As I said earlier, Peru is no longer considered a C&MA mission field as of July 2004. As Ed and I were praying about where else God would have us serve after our year of Home Assignment, an invitation came for Ed to apply for a teaching position in the missions department of Nyack College. The Lord led him to apply for the position at his alma mater. Ed is a 1977 graduate of Nyack. Following what we believe is the Lord's leading, we have just begun here at Nyack. Due to an opening in the language department, I have the blessing of teaching the language I love - Spanish! |
What does your faith mean in your classroom or discipline? |
| It is vitally important to me that the students see the reality of my life in Christ and my daily walk with Him, so I seek to make that evident in my teaching. I pray before class begins, committing it to Him. I have the students memorize key Bible verses in Spanish, plus on a weekly basis I seek to share from my own life experiences what God has taught me. My desire is to see the students catch my love for the Spanish language and for the people who speak it. I want them to see that it is a wonderful tool that can be used to share the good news of Christ with those whose heart language is Spanish. I want them to leave my classroom with a love and burden for Hispanic people and with a desire to reach them. I want them to appreciate their culture and the beauty of their language. |
What does your faith mean in relationships (particularly with students)? |
| In my relationships with students, I seek to encourage them spiritually. It is my desire to point them to Jesus and His Word, that they might grow strong and deep in their personal walk with Him. |
What are your favorite courses to teach? |
| Spanish, Elementary I and II, Intermediate I and II! |
