Financial Services: Verification

What is Verification?

Each year, the U.S. Department of Education randomly selects FAFSAs for a process called “verification.”  In this process, Nyack College is required by law to compare the information from your FAFSA with documentation we request that you submit to our office.  This may include copies of your W-2, Schedule-C or 1099 forms, IRS tax return transcripts, a verification worksheet, or proof of other sources of income.

If you have completed your FAFSA and received a Student Aid Report (SAR), you may see an asterisk (*) next to your EFC – this means that your application has been selected for verification.  Nyack College has the right to select additional applicants for verification even if they are not selected by the government.  All students in the HEOP program are required to be verified.

Please follow the instructions provided to you in your financial aid package and submit all documents in a timely manner.  Your financial aid will be incomplete until all the required documents are submitted to our office in full.  If there are any differences between your FAFSA and the documents you’ve submitted, corrections may need to be made, which also means that there could be changes to your federal awards (i.e. Pell Grant, SEOG, Direct Subsidized and/or Unsubsidized Stafford Loans, and Perkins Loans).  Your federal awards are ESTIMATES until the verification process is complete!

For any questions about this process, please call or contact (link) your Financial Aid Counselor.
