Prayer of Dedication

DEDICATION DAY PRAYER
NYACK COLLEGE/ALLIANCE THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY
NYC Campus
Friday, January 13, 2017

Almighty God, we come before You with joyful and grateful hearts for what You have done by providing this campus for us.

Now, to our joy and our gratitude, we add a humble resolve. Ours is not a resolve born of a desire for our own attainment. Nor is it a resolve born of confidence in ourselves. No, ours is a resolve born of a great call. It is the call You imparted to our founder. It is the call that he imparted to those he taught and served.  It is the call passed along faithfully from generation to generation of those who have come before us.

It is the call to prepare men and women to live the whole gospel throughout the whole world.

We freely and fully embrace this call and we declare living the whole gospel throughout the whole world to be the impetus of the very mission of Nyack College and Alliance Theological Seminary (ATS).

And all who are gathered here declare…

We dedicate this people and this place, oh Lord.

As we embrace the call to prepare the men and women You entrust to us, we embrace the call for Nyack and ATS to remain “academically excellent.”

Father, lead us to measure excellence in the ways that You measure excellence. Remind us that while we are called to teach, we are first called to learn. While we are called to lead, we are first called to serve. Make our first and most important knowledge the knowledge of You. Then permeate that knowledge with Your love for though, “we all possess knowledge, knowledge puffs up, while love builds up.”

We pray that You will continue to nurture in us the academic excellence that builds people and that this campus will be a place where this happens to the glory of God.

And all who are gathered here declare…

We dedicate this people and this place, oh Lord.

We accept the call to live out the good news of your love throughout the whole world and we embrace love as a defining characteristic of our institution.

We pray that You draw men and women to this campus from every corner of the globe. Then we pray You send them out from here to every corner of the globe. Allow Nyack and ATS to be the school of the people of the world, by the people of the world and for the people of the world. And allow us to be this so that all the people of the world will know Your glory and Your grace.

And all who are gathered here declare…

We dedicate this people and this place, oh Lord.

Lord, we recognize that while Nyack is celebrated for its intentional diversity, we still have strides to make. We confess that sometimes our differences still divide rather than enrich our community, and we pray for Your forgiveness and for Your love that binds us together in perfect unity.

Individually and as a community, heal us of the tendency to believe that we belong at the center of our experience. Remind us that as King, You reside there. Cause us to become true citizens of Your kingdom; men and women of every people, tribe and tongue serving side by side as equals.

And all who are gathered here declare…

We dedicate this people and this place, oh Lord.

Father, we acknowledge that while the world in which we live has become more connected, far too many people have become more isolated. Our goal is to send forth graduates from all of our programs who will bring comfort and hope to those who are hurting.

We acknowledge that social relevance must begin with personal responsibility. Build in each of us a sense of responsibility that frees us from self-absorption and propels us into the lives of others.

We pray that our campus and our community will be a place illuminated by Your presence so that we can send graduates to be the light of the world. We pray that our campus and our community will be a place characterized by Your healing touch so that we can send our graduates out to be the salt of the earth.

And all who are gathered here declare…

We dedicate this people and this place, oh Lord.

Holy Spirit, we acknowledge that before You do Your work through Your people, You do Your work in Your people. We celebrate that “the One who began a good work in us will see it through until the day of Christ Jesus.”  We understand that some of the preparation You intend for the men and women who will live the whole gospel throughout the whole world is the kind of preparation that only You can accomplish.

And so we pray Holy Spirit that You will dwell here. We ask that You accomplish personal transformation in the lives of all who You call to this place. We pray today as Dr. Simpson prayed, that You will “fill us with the heart of Christ.”

Lord Jesus, fill us with Your heart as we encounter You. Allow us to encounter You so that we can know You. As we know You, move us to serve You. And allow us to lead the students You entrust to us to do the same.

And all who are gathered here declare…

We dedicate this people and this place, oh Lord.

Father, though these are the desires of our hearts for our school in our own strength, we simply cannot accomplish these. We have dedicated ourselves to outcomes that only You can achieve. And so this day, we dedicate our campus and ourselves to You, the author and finisher of our faith and the giver of every good and perfect gift.

Work in us and work through us. Draw men and women to this place that You might do the same in and through them.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ.

And all who are gathered here declare…

We dedicate this people and this place, oh Lord.

Amen.
