About RSS at Nyack.edu What is RSS?
RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication" (or "Rich Site Summary"). Practically speaking, RSS provides a convenient way to keep up with all of your favorite web sites at a glance from one list. RSS information reflects the actual content of the origin web site, but exists independent of the site's design so it can be shared and delivered to users in a number of ways. RSS is a standard by which sites can provide users with frequently changing content like news, blog posts, calendar information, or other time-sensitive data. RSS content is broadcast in a simple text format called XML, which organizes it into simple elements such as headline, date, description, link, etc. This content can be interpreted and displayed on the user end by an RSS reader. Each item in the XML "feed" will link the reader back to the web site to read more. How do I use RSS?
This will vary according to your browsing habits and software preference, but basically you use RSS by subscribing to a feed in your favorite browser or email client. All current versions of major web browsers offer a "subscribe" option when RSS feeds are discovered. Once you subscribe, you can check the latest headlines from a feed in your browser's RSS window. Internet Explorer organizes RSS feeds with bookmarks in the "Favorites" bar, while other browsers like Mozilla's Firefox can do the same or utilize free add-ons for enriched RSS support.
