AGSC Prerequisites

What if I have not taken the necessary prerequisite psychology courses?

Many of our applicants completed their undergraduate degree in a field other than counseling or psychology. If this is the case and you have not completed the three necessary prerequisite courses listed below for your intended program, here are several suggestions. Students must have at least two of three required prerequisite classes completed and a plan for completing the third in order to register for AGSC classes. Prerequisite classes must be passed in order to be accepted.

Mental Health Counseling Applicants

  • General Psychology (or Introduction to Psychology)
  • Abnormal Psychology

Marriage & Family Therapy Applicants

  • Theories of Counseling
  • Abnormal Psychology
  • Developmental / Family Studies Course

If you don’t have one or all of these, please do not be discouraged! Here are a few options you have to meet these requirements:

Option 1: Online Courses- Nyack College's Organizational Management Program offers Abnormal Psychology and Theories of Personality online! This quick, convenient way of taking courses allows you to get one of the prerequisites done in only 6 weeks. Go online at http://www.nyackonline.org/index.learn?action=aits  or call today to get more information!

If you have any questions, email Lissette Robinson or call at 1-800-876-9225.

Option 2: Testing Out* -The organizations listed below offer the opportunity of “testing out” of the prerequisite courses. Through this option students are asked to use study materials to prepare for the necessary classes. Then once prepared, the student may set up a testing appointment in their area to take a test demonstrating a working knowledge of the subject equivalent to what would have been obtained during a traditional undergraduate class. This method takes only a few weeks to complete the required test.

Option 3: Correspondence Courses - Correspondence or long distance courses from an accredited undergraduate school are another appropriate way of earning undergraduate credit for psychology courses.

Option 4: Local Community Colleges - Enroll at a local community college or university to complete the necessary classes.

 *Testing Out Option
You may choose to contact the learning center and “test out” of the course/s you need to complete prior to registration. Testing centers/proctors are available across the country. Call each organization for their list of testing locations.
