Student Loans: Burden or Opportunity?

"Thanks to soaring tuition costs, borrowing has become an inescapable fact of college life," according to Gannett News Service. "Two-thirds of students at four-year colleges carried loan debt in 2004, compared with less than half in 1993, according to the project. 'My first advice to families is save, save early ... work with your institutions to see what aid is available,' said Diane Jones, assistant secretary of post-secondary education at the U.S. Department of Education. 'But understand that for many families, taking on debt is going to be part of the solution of meeting the cost.'"
