Andres Valenzuela...He's Leaving With Gratitude

Posted by Deborah.Walker on Friday February 12, 2010

Come to the Edge
Come to the edge, he said.
They said: We are afraid.
Come to the edge, he said.
They came.
He pushed them and they flew.

It was easier for Andres Valenzuela to share the words of the French poet, Guillaume Apollinaire, in response to the litany of loving expressions he listened to from administrators, faculty, staff and students who gathered to salute the legacy he leaves and to pray over for new beginnings. A chapter of his life, that opened nearly 15 years ago, was coming to a close.
What began for Andres at Nyack as an education, evolved into full-time employment that allowed him to wear many hats including—but not limited to—Director of Financial Services, campus photographer, yearbook advisor, and soccer aficionado. The titles that really matter are friend, confidante, coach, counselor, encourager, and colleague.
Goodbye is never an easy word to say when an individual is so loved, but it is precisely because of love that the well-wishers who gathered could speak so poignantly about a man of God standing on “the edge.” In the search for his own words, he latched upon one to sum up how he feels about Nyack: grateful. Wherever and to whomever, God sends Andres and Kim Valenzuela, blessing is sure to be dispensed and received. And we know they will not just fly…they will soar!
Vaya con Dios, friends!
