A Service Opportunity for Graduating Seniors

Posted by Deborah.Walker on Thursday March 27, 2008

New York Campus Compact (NYCC) is a coalition of more than 50 colleges and universities that promotes active citizenship as a goal of higher education. Nyack College has received an NYCC announcement about AmeriCorps VISTA positions starting in August 2008 at 25 colleges and universities across New York State.  These VISTA members serve as:

  • Campus advocates on issues of hunger and homelessness, at-risk youth intervention, community development, and access to higher education
  • Liaisons between community organizations and students, faculty, and campus resources
  • Resources for students and student groups looking to volunteer
  • Resources for faculty developing service-learning courses
  • Mentors and leaders for service-learning students and volunteers

VISTA members with New York Campus Compact receive as compensation:

  • Living stipend of $10,380 ($11,388 downstate)
  • Choice of $4,725 education award or $1,200 stipend upon completion of service
  • Health benefits
  • Student loan forbearance
  • Relocation and travel allowance
  • Extensive opportunities for professional development and personal reflection including seminars, conferences, and retreats
  • Leadership experience working with faculty, staff, students, and community partners
  • Other benefits such as housing, meal plans, travel opportunities, and post-service scholarships vary by site

Over the past 40 years, VISTA members have created lasting change in the communities they have served.  Their experiences working and living in poverty have helped these volunteers become powerful leaders, scholars, and community advocates.  More information about the program, applications, and publicity materials can be found online at <>.  The application deadline is June 1, 2008, although some sites have already begun selecting candidates.
