Five Nyack Teacher Candidates Receive Scholar-Athlete Recognition by the CACC

Five School of Education teacher candidates have been recognized by the CACC (Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference) for their excellence in both athletics and academics. These five ladies are Brianna Kane, Annah Aguilar and Michelle Makela for volleyball and Captain Amanda Halter and Danielle Page for soccer. To be selected for this prestigious honor one must achieve and maintain a GPA of at least 3.5 in the classroom, while also excelling on the athletic field.

These outstanding future teachers were asked the following questions:

  • How have you managed to be successful at both sports and academics?
  • How have the values learned in athletics helped you to do well in your coursework?
  • What time management strategies do you use? Do you do better in season? Do you have an athletic learning style, e.g., do better under pressure?
  • Do you plan on coaching when you teach?

Following are quotes representing their responses:

  • It is by the grace of God that I have been gifted in both academia and athletics
  • Being a Christian athlete has transformed the way I think and act.
  • God deserves my very best efforts, no matter what I am doing on the field or in the classroom.
  • As a student athlete it is important to remember that you are a student first and an athlete second.
  • Athletics and teacher preparation courses have taught me hard work, discipline, teamwork, perseverance, and time management.
  • God willing I will combine teaching and coaching in the future.

These ladies recognize that God has blessed them with gifts and talents them to influence hundreds for Christ domestically and overseas in classroom and athletic settings. Opportunities through sports for such Christian missionary organizations, such as Athletes in Action, have been enormously successful in fulfilling the Great Commission. Congratulations to them for their achievement and bright futures as Christian teacher-coaches.
