Dr. Jacqueline Washington and Dr. Peter Park are recognized as National Academies Education Fellows in the Life Sciences. They attended the 2013 Northeast Summer Institutes workshop on Scientific Teaching at Stony Brook University. The meeting was sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the National Academies. The five-day workshop, attended by teams from 14 institutions, was designed to transform the undergraduate science classrooms of these institutions by implementing pedagogical approaches which have been scientifically shown to engage students, leading to improved learning outcomes.  The Summer Institutes on Undergraduate Education teaches principles and best practices of scientific teaching, with special emphasis on student-centered learning through active learning and cooperative learning.  Current education research, formative and summative assessment methods, active learning techniques, and diversity awareness were integrated into the week, creating a forum to exchange ideas and develop innovative and effective instructional materials to be implemented at the home institutions of the attendees. At a 2014 follow-up meeting, participants will present on their scientific teaching experiences during the year.
