Wilmington, DE (Saturday, September 8, 2012) – Nyack’s women’s cross country team was hoping to use its momentum from a great 3rd place finish last weekend at the Delaware Valley Invitational, and that’s exactly what they did today. The Lady Warriors took 1st place with 47 points – claiming the 12th Annual Wilmington Invitational title as Nyack placed three freshmen amongst the top-10 finishers to help win the meet.
For a second straight week, Rebecca Wakeley (CACC Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week) took top-10 individual honors along with improvements from Nicole Pagan and Tori Trador, who both receive individual honors for the first time this season.
Eighty-six competitors took the starting line at the beautiful 5,000 meter horse ranch course at Carousel Park, all coming from eleven colleges/universities and four of them being schools in the CACC conference.
The course was very demanding with rolling terrain, descents, and powerful hills that tested even the fastest athletes.
Six of the nine Nyack runners who raced this weekend, were successful with finishing in the top-20. Freshman, Megan Curran and Briana Kuykendall were 20th and 19th overall. Sophomore, Pamela Code missed the top-10 by only two spots, placing 12th overall, while Trador secured herself 10th place. Pagan and Wakeley conquered 4th and 3rd.
Alethea Davidson of Wilmington University won the meet, taking home the individual title for the Wildcats.
“We got good solid effort from our whole team,” head coach Latia Deylii said – “especially on such a challenging course like this. Times were slower but getting in this type of race is exactly what we needed to continue improving in our training. I was very pleased with the overall effort.”
The 2nd and 3rd place team finishes respectfully went to Georgian Court with 59 points and Catholic University with 72 points.
Nyack looks forward to racing next weekend Saturday, September 15th, 2012 in Nashua, NH at the River Hawk Invite hosted by UMass Lowell. This new location is the course preview for the NCAA East Regional meet held in November.
