PHILADELPHIA, PA (Sunday, October 23, 2011)– “The Perfect Race Day” is what many called this sunny 63 degree morning at the Central Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. The Lady Warriors left feeling victorious this year placing in the Top-5 improving with the school’s ranking of all the XC teams in the conference and also took home the 2011 Anne Jackson Sportsmanship Award.
Nyack College finished 5th overall, Georgian Court 4th place, Dominican College took 3rd, Wilmington University came in 2nd place, and the Philadelphia Lady Rams respectably earned the 1st place spot with 21 points to win the championship title.
Senior, Brianna Meyers and freshman, Pamela Code from Nyack individually placed in the Top-20 of about 90 competitors and Meyers in addition, earned All-CACC honors for placing in the Top-15. Philly University’s Sarah Simonetti won and completed the 5K event in 18:43, smashing the previous CACC course record of 19:23 set by Georgian Court’s Heather Miara from back in 2007.
Senior and Captain, Deborah McCarthy was the third Lady Warrior in (after Meyers & Code) for the Nyack Team, and then came sophomore, Bethany Allison (4th), and junior Alethea Brown (5th) to round out the first five Nyackers out of their seven racers to finish.
Assistant Coach, Latia Deylii states after the race: “All we wanted was to be amongst the Top-5 best teams in our conference and today, we did just that.” – At last year’s 2010 CACC Championship Race, the Lady Warriors finished in 6th and in 2009 they finished in 7th place. “In order for us to continue improving in our rankings, we have to continue setting the bar as high as we can for the following season. These ladies deserve this and I applaud their hard work and phenomenal efforts today.”
Assistant Coach, Sarah Sauer also adds, “I am very proud of this team. They really dug deep and showed what they were made of. They’ve kept their individual goals on the forefront of their minds and that is what helped push them to this point of success as a team.” The entire women’s team PR’d and ran the best they’ve ever had on the 5,000 meter course in Belmont Plateau.
Head Coach Wendy Muckell’s eyes were filled with tears of joy as she celebrated with the girls. She has been coaching this program for 6 years. “To have not one or two, but ALL of the girls improve collectively and peak right where they are supposed to speaks volume to the trust and precision of her training program,” says one of the parents present at the meet.
The 2011 CACC “Runner of the Year” award went to Champion, Sarah Simonetti, the “Rookie of the Year” award went to Taylor Falvey, and the “Coach of the Year” award went to Head Coach Dave Thomas (all from Philadelphia University). For the women’s team the “Anne Jackson Sportsmanship Award” went to Nyack College and for the men’s team, the “Sportsmanship Award” went to conference champs, Felician College.
The Running Warriors have their next competition on Sunday November 6, 2011 – the NCAA Division II East Region Championships at Franklin Park in Boston, Massachusetts.
