BETHLEHEM, PA (Friday, September 20, 2011) – Lehigh University hosted the 38th-annual Paul Short Run presented by BROOKS on Friday at the Goodman Campus. Our men competed in the 8K event and the women took on their first 6K event of the season. The Nyack Warriors were led on the women's side by Freshman- Pamela Code (Fort Drum, NY) and on the men's side, Senior- Stuart Guild, (Hicksville, NY) who were the first runners in for their Nyack Team.
The Paul Short Run has become one of the largest sporting events in the country. There were 135 college/university teams on each gender side, making this year’s turnout, the largest invitational Lehigh University has ever had.
Debbie Utesch, Lehigh Woman’s Head Coach states: “It’s exciting to have this type and level of competition right here on our home course. It’s probably the deepest field and talent that we have ever hosted at the Paul Short Meet for both men and women. A number of nationally ranked teams, and the women’s field was just overwhelming with the people in the Top-20, we had twenty states represented and teams from Canada. So it’s really turned into a benchmark collegiate cross country event with the way everyone pulls together to run this show.”
There were 5,000 runners competing and just about the same amount of spectators as well. With getting from the starting line to the mile marks, there were thousands trying to get to the same spot. “I feel like this was such a fun race for the team and a very exciting experience for all of us being able to also enjoy watching all these amazing institutions compete,” says Coach Tia from Nyack College. This meet was so big, it had to be divided into three races. Of course with having such an elite athletic field of competitors, the Nyack men’s team entered this race simply for the challenge of taking on a different racing momentum. Up and coming runner, Jordan Wilhelm from Nyack PR’d today, taking off four minutes from his previous best 8K race time. For the women’s team, running this 6K helped them work on pacing strategies and setting goals for the NCAA Division II East Regional meet, held in Boston, MA on November 6, 2011. The Lady Warriors usually compete in 5K events but the Regional event is a 6K.
The Paul Short Run consisted of 10 nationally ranked Division I schools and 3 nationally ranked Division II & Division III schools. Head Coach Todd Etters of the Men’s Lehigh University team adds, “this is the place to go if you want to work hard and be treated with a great experience.” Aside from the course being fairly muddy from all the rain that occurred the night before, the Nyack Team still ran great races individually. All of the events that occurred today has slower times, resulting from the sliding and sinking on the muddy areas of the course.
The Running Warriors Look forward to hosting their 2011 Homecoming 5k Road Race in two weeks on Saturday, October 15, 2011. Race applications are now available on the athletics home page.
