Audition Guidesheet - School of Music NYC

The following information is provided to help you present a successful audition for acceptance as a music major at Nyack College, and/or for consideration for a music scholarship.

• You must apply for admission to Nyack College before auditioning.

• For those auditioning for entry into the Bachelor of Arts in Music program, or interested in an interdisciplinary major with a music concentration: present one selection in any style that shows a readiness for college level music study.

• For those auditioning for entry into the Music Education, Church Music, Composition, or Vocal/Instrumental Performance programs and/or for consideration for a scholarship: present two solo pieces, classical in nature and contrasting in style.

• Sight-reading, ear-training, and piano skills will be evaluated at all auditions.

• A Basic Music Skills Assessment Test will be given after the audition.

Vocalists:

Perform pieces from memory. An accompanist can be provided or you may use your own accompanist.  A piece performed in a foreign language is a good choice for a vocal audition.

Pianists and Guitarists:

Perform pieces from memory.
Be prepared to perform scales and arpeggios.

Instrumentalists:

May perform with music.
An accompanist can be provided or you may use your own accompanist.
Be prepared to perform scales and arpeggios.

Scholarships:

You will be considered for a music scholarship at the time of your audition. (Music Achievement Grant for music majors; Music Ensemble Achievement Grant for non-music majors.) To be eligible for music scholarship consideration you must apply for the competition held in June when the Music Competition scholarships are awarded. (A requirement for eligibility for the competition scholarships is that you will attend Nyack College, New York City, for the first time in the fall following the audition.)
