The multifaceted Communications discipline enables students in three distinctively designed concentrations – Emerging Technology, Mass Communications and Dramatics Arts - to identify and evaluate multiple principles of arts and media from historic and contemporary practical perspectives.
The Department of Communications stresses a hands-on approach to learning, and the department’s faculty brings a blend of scholarship and professional training to the classroom. Communications students are passionate about the arts and are motivated to become relevant in the world around them, and in addition to traditional classroom activities, students will be given the opportunity to participate in both on campus and off campus internships, as the New York metropolitan area offers vast opportunities for Communications students within the film, television, live theater, and radio fields. Students who major in Communications may expect to be prepared for careers in areas that use speaking, writing, and dramatic skills, such as broadcast production, public relations, sales and advertising, acting, producing, directing, and more. The major, additionally, provides excellent preparatory skills for graduate studies success in Theatre, Film, Education, Ministry, Law, Business and all areas of Communication Arts.
Moreover, the Department of Communications is in conjunction with Warrior Media, a Nyack College collaborative effort between production students, faculty, administration and alumni. Warrior Media provides a variety of opportunities for Communications students, including WNYK Warrior Radio (a student-run campus radio station), online webcasting and a video production lab equipped with broadcast quality cameras and editing software.
